National Parks in North India

The innumerable shades, hues and varieties in terms of culture, community and tradition make India stand out in the world map as a unique nation. There exist as many as 80 National Parks in North India along with the sanctuaries, tiger reserves protecting and preserving Wildlife in India. The first ever National Park in India, the Hailey National Park, now known as Jim Corbett National Park, was set up in 1935 in an exclusive attempt to save tigers. By 1970, India was already boasting of five national parks. At present, as many as 166 National Parks in North India have been certified. Plans are on to establish the rest of the scheduled parks.

The National Parks in North India are largely homes to the rare elephants, Asiatic lions, tigers, swamp deer, nilgai, sambar deer, one horned rhinoceros, chinkaras and a huge array of wild birds. Keoladeo Ghana National Park - The hunting ground for the Maharaja of Jaipur, this park was developed in the latter part of the nineteenth century. Home to a huge number of bird species, it also preserves some of the rare wild animals.

Sultanpur National Park - Primarily a shelter for various species of birds, this park at 46 kms to the south-west of Delhi, in the state of Haryana, is home to a number of rare mammals.

Ranthambore National Park - Gracing the eastern edge of Rajasthan, this park is principally an abode of the tigers. Other animals like nilgai, sambar and chital are also its residents. The Ranthambore Fort, the Jogi Mahal, the Ganesh Temple and the three Talaos are must-visits during your trip to this place.

Dudhwa National Park - A territory of extensive sal forests and vast grasslands, this park famously preserves the tiger, leopard, swamp deer and the one horned rhino among other various species of fauna.

Govind National Park - Located in the Uttarkashi district of the state of Uttaranchal, this wildlife reserve is abode to more than 150 species of birds and 15 species of mammals. Snow leopard, black bear and bharal are among the most important inhabitants here.
